Women's Pit Vigil 1993

Pit camp organised at Vane Tempest Colliery, Seaham 1993
Images and words relating to the campaign against pit closures in Seaham in 1993. Between January and June 1993 I participated in the Women's Vigil outside Vane Tempest Colliery in Seaham. This was one of 20 pits listed for immanent closure by the Conservative Government in October 1992.
Eight vigils were organised across the UK by women associated with the National Women Against Pit Closures movement that had been formed during the Miners' Strike of 1984-85 and which operated alongside the National Union of Mineworkers.
I took photographs throughout the course of the Vigil and subsequently wrote an article published in Feminist Review in October 1996. Much later, in 2017, I completed the editing of a booklet that had been started by the women in 1993. This was published with the help of Heritage Coast Partnership.
